The Stone House
Guangzhou's Catholic cathedral is one of very few Gothic churches on earth built entirely of granite — walls, pillars, both 58m towers — which is why locals just call it 石室, the Stone House. French architects raised it between 1863 and 1888 on the site of the destroyed viceroy's compound, and the material makes it read heavier and older than its European cousins. It is free, open roughly 08:00–17:30 (arrive before 16:00), and still a working parish: Mass is said in Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean and English. Give it 45–90 minutes and fold it into a Beijing Road or Haizhu Square walk — it is two blocks from the river.
Why a granite cathedral, and why here
The site is pointed: the ruins of the Liangguang viceroy's yamen, destroyed in the Second Opium War, granted to the French under the treaty that followed it. The cathedral that rose on it was pure Île-de-France Gothic executed in south-China granite ferried from Kowloon — look for the carved Jerusalem 1863 and Roma 1888 foundation stones at the base of the towers, the two dates bracketing 25 years of construction.
Inside, the granite does what limestone never quite does: the nave stays cool and dim in a Guangzhou August, and the rose windows read hotter for it. Dress as you would for any working church, keep quiet during services, and note that the courtyard gates sometimes close over lunch.

Is Sacred Heart Cathedral in Guangzhou free?
Yes, entry is free. It is a working cathedral, so visits pause around services — the English Mass is typically Sunday afternoon, and the notice board at the gate lists the current week's times in all four languages.
Why is it called the Stone House?
石室 (Shishi) — because the whole structure is granite: walls, columns and both towers, with no brick core. That makes it one of a tiny handful of all-granite Gothic cathedrals anywhere, and the reason it survived a century that was not kind to Guangzhou's churches.
How do you get to Sacred Heart Cathedral by metro?
Line 2 or Line 6 to Haizhu Square, Exit B2, then about five minutes north on foot — or Line 6 to Yide Road, which is marginally closer. The dried-seafood wholesale streets you cross on the way are their own free spectacle.
Is it worth going inside, or just photographing the outside?
Go in. The exterior is the famous photograph, but the granite interior — cool, dark, with the rose windows burning at the ends — is the part that stays with people, and it takes fifteen minutes. Before 10:00 the light comes through the eastern glass.
