The Ghost Market at 2am
Guangzhou eats at 23:00–03:00 more seriously than any major Chinese city except perhaps Chengdu, and its centrepiece is the 鬼市 ghost market at 滨江西路 × 通津路 on the south bank of Haizhu Bridge: 60+ stalls under red plastic canopies, daily 00:00–05:00, peaking 01:00–03:00, at ¥30–50 a head. Eat 紫苏炒螺 (perilla-fried river snails), 风炉烧烤 (wind-furnace charcoal BBQ — garlic oysters, skewers), 椒盐濑尿虾 (salt-and-pepper mantis shrimp), 干炒牛河, and — genuinely — 老火汤, old-fire soup, at two in the morning. Metro Line 2 → 市二宫 Shi'ergong, Exit E, then about 15 minutes along Tongjin Road. The metro is shut by the time you leave: budget a DiDi.
Two honest cautions
Street-stall enforcement moves these markets. Guangzhou runs periodic crackdowns and relocations, and the ghost market has shifted before. It was operating as described at build time, but if you are making a special 01:00 trip across the city, check a recent Dianping or Xiaohongshu post from the last few weeks first. Baoye Road is the other established late-night seafood and BBQ street and a reasonable fallback.
Cash is genuinely useful here. Most stalls take QR, some do not, and at 02:00 the ATM options are limited. Carry ¥200–300 in notes. Since February 2026 businesses are legally required to accept cash again, which helps, but a stallholder with no change at 3am is still a stallholder with no change.

Yes. Guangzhou's street-food hygiene is generally good, the stalls are high-turnover, and the city's night streets are safe and busy. Pick stalls with queues, eat things cooked in front of you, and treat raw-marinated shellfish (生腌) with the same caution you would anywhere.
How do I get home from the ghost market?
DiDi. The metro closes around 23:30 and does not resume until about 06:00, so plan the ride back before you go out. At 2am fares are low and the app removes the language problem entirely — this is exactly the situation street taxis are worst for.
What should I order at a Guangzhou night market?
