The Guangzhou Route
China's 240-hour visa-free transit gives 55 nationalities — including US, Mexican, Ukrainian and Indonesian passport holders — ten days with no visa application, and Guangzhou Baiyun only became a designated port for it on 5 November 2025, which is why no guide has written this trip up. The route that satisfies the scheme's own rules: land at Baiyun, base in Guangzhou, move freely across the Pearl River Delta (you may cross provincial boundaries, and Guangdong lets you exit from any open port in the province), then exit by high-speed train to Hong Kong West Kowloon in 47 minutes — which satisfies the onward-ticket requirement, because Hong Kong counts as a third region. That is the whole trick.
What you must have before you board
Three things. Get them wrong and you are denied boarding at your departure airport, not at Chinese immigration.
1. An eligible passport. 55 nationalities qualify, including the United States, Canada, the UK, Mexico, Indonesia, Ukraine and all Schengen states. If your passport is on the 30-day unilateral list instead, you do not need this scheme at all — you get more time with fewer conditions.
2. A confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region, dated within 240 hours, with a seat. Air, sea or rail all count. Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan count as third regions — so a Guangzhou South → Hong Kong West Kowloon high-speed rail booking is a valid onward ticket, and it costs ¥185–240.
3. Tell your airline at check-in that you are travelling under the 240-hour visa-free transit scheme. Ground staff outside China are the single most common failure point — they see no visa and refuse boarding. Say the words, and have the onward ticket on your phone.
On arrival: use the dedicated 24/240-hour transit lane, get the temporary entry permit stamp, and register your address with local police within 24 hours. Hotels do this automatically at check-in; if you stay in a private apartment you must do it yourself at the local 派出所. The clock starts at 00:00 on the day after you arrive, so you effectively gain most of an extra day.

The scheme allows crossing provincial boundaries between 24 eligible regions, so this route is well within the rules — it barely leaves Guangdong. Keep the exit date inside 240 hours from 00:00 on your first full day and you have margin to spare.
The delta does the heavy lifting
The Greater Bay Area one-hour living circle is operationally real: four intercity railways now run metro-style with QR-code boarding, no advance ticket, 39 stations and 200 km/h. Foshan and Dongguan are 30 minutes, Zhaoqing and Huizhou inside the hour, Hong Kong 47 minutes. Ten days here reaches more genuinely different places than ten days based almost anywhere else in China.
It also means you are never far from your exit. If plans change, Guangdong's rule that you may leave from any open port in the province gives you Baiyun, Guangzhou South, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge and West Kowloon as options. That flexibility is unusual and it is worth knowing you have it.
Alipay and WeChat Pay both take foreign Visa and Mastercard now, and since 12 October 2025 you can tap a foreign contactless card straight at the metro gate. Two catches nobody prints: payments over ¥200 carry a 3% surcharge, and WeChat's RMB cap is ¥6,000 per transaction whatever the dollar limit says. Since 1 February 2026 every business is legally required to accept cash again, so carry ¥500–1,000 as a backstop. Complete passport verification in the app before you fly, or risk control will hold you to about US$200 a go.
