Hong Kong and Macau are separate immigration jurisdictions. Crossing into either is an exit from mainland China, whatever the map says.
If you hold a single-entry Chinese visa, a day trip to Hong Kong ends your mainland stay. You cannot come back on the same visa. This catches people out constantly, because the train takes 47 minutes and both immigration halls are in one building — it does not feel like an international departure. It is one.
If you entered under the 30-day unilateral visa-free scheme, none of this applies. Each entry is a fresh 30 days and you can bounce back and forth as often as you like.
And it works in your favour on the way in. Hong Kong West Kowloon is itself a designated 240-hour visa-free entry port into the mainland. An eligible traveller can fly into Hong Kong, take the train north and enter China visa-free at the station — which for US passport holders is often cleaner than flying into Baiyun, because the onward-ticket requirement is satisfied by the return flight they already hold.
