Great for Business, Thin on Guangzhou
Tianhe is the commercial heart of modern Guangzhou and the right base if you are working, need reliable English, or want an international hotel brand. It puts you on Metro Lines 1 and 3, within reach of roughly 80% of the city's attractions, and next to the densest mall cluster in southern China. It also costs 30–40% more than Yuexiu for the same standard of room, has almost no heritage, and draws the same criticism from residents every time: hotel-lobby sterile, could be any Asian CBD. Rooms run ¥350–2,500 (~$49–350).
Tiyu Xilu is where Guangzhou shops. Zhujiang New Town is where it poses.
That is the line locals use, and it is the most useful sentence anyone can give you about the eastern half of this city.
Tianhe has two centres and visitors conflate them constantly. Tiyu Xilu and the Tianhe Sports Center is the older, denser, louder one — the commercial heart since the 1990s, and where the crowds actually are. Running east from it is the mall wall along Tianhe Road: TaiKoo Hui, Tee Mall, Grandview Mall — the largest of them, with an aquarium inside — and CITIC Plaza. Metro Line 1 or 3 to Tiyu Xilu, or Line 1 or 3 to Tianhe Sports Center. Two kilometres south, Zhujiang New Town is the planned CBD of supertalls and ceremonial axis. Same district, entirely different evening.
North-east of Tiyu Xilu, Gangding and Shipaiqiao is the electronics belt — floors of components, phone repair, computer parts and grey-market everything, on Line 3. It is not a tourist attraction and it is genuinely interesting for about forty minutes if you like that kind of thing.
The metro is the real argument for staying here. Line 3 reaches roughly 80% of what a visitor wants and runs to Baiyun airport in about 45 minutes for ¥6–8. It is also, by a distance, the most crowded metro line in China — genuinely unpleasant from 08:00 to 09:30 and 17:30 to 19:30. If your hotel is on Line 3 and your day starts at 09:00, you have chosen a commute.
Tianhe against the alternatives, honestly
Tianhe wins on infrastructure and loses on everything that made you consider Guangzhou.

The 30–40% Tianhe premium over Yuexiu is the single most actionable number on this page. Over four nights it is roughly an extra night's room, spent on a district with no old city in it.
What Tianhe is actually good for

TaiKoo Hui, Tee Mall, CITIC Plaza and Grandview Mall in a continuous 2km run. Grandview is the largest and has an aquarium inside it. As shopping it is world-class and completely interchangeable with Shanghai or Bangkok; as a wet-afternoon fallback it is genuinely useful.
Business and English
The concentration of international brands is the highest in Guangzhou: Aloft around ¥600–900, Grand Hyatt about ¥1,200, Four Seasons from ¥1,600 and Rosewood ¥1,500–2,800 in the two supertalls. Budget domestic chains such as Hanting sit at ¥280–450 if you can find them — Booking's coverage of that band is thin.
Line 3 to almost everything
Tianhe's real amenity. Line 3 runs south to Canton Tower and north to Baiyun airport, Line 1 runs west along the old-city spine to Liwan. Foreign contactless Visa, Mastercard, Amex and JCB have worked at the gates since 12 October 2025, so you do not need a transit card.

If you are here for meetings, a trade visit or a stopover where reliable English and a predictable room matter more than character, Tianhe is the correct answer and the international brand density is the highest in the city. Just go in knowing the premium: 30–40% over an equivalent Yuexiu room, for a district you could mistake for six other Asian CBDs. Check dates against the Canton Fair — 15–19 October, 23–27 October and 31 October – 4 November 2026 — when Tianhe spikes along with Pazhou.

Is Tianhe a good place to stay in Guangzhou?
For business, yes — it has the best English, the most international brands and Line 3 straight to Baiyun airport in about 45 minutes. For a holiday it is a weak choice: rooms run 30–40% above Yuexiu at ¥350–2,500, and there is almost nothing historic within walking distance. Stay in Yuexiu or Liwan instead unless work decides it for you.
What is the difference between Tianhe and Zhujiang New Town?
Zhujiang New Town is the planned CBD inside Tianhe district — supertalls, the Opera House, the ceremonial axis. Tiyu Xilu and Tianhe Sports Center, two kilometres north, is the older and much busier commercial centre. Locals put it plainly: Tiyu Xilu is where Guangzhou shops, Zhujiang New Town is where it poses.
Which mall in Tianhe is the biggest?
Grandview Mall, which also has an aquarium inside it. TaiKoo Hui is the upmarket one, Tee Mall the mainstream one and CITIC Plaza sits at the eastern end. They run in an almost continuous 2km line along Tianhe Road from Tiyu Xilu on Metro Lines 1 and 3, which makes the whole strip a reliable wet-afternoon fallback.
Is Line 3 in Guangzhou really that crowded?
Yes. It is the most crowded metro line in mainland China, and 08:00–09:30 and 17:30–19:30 are genuinely unpleasant rather than merely busy. Fares are ¥2–8 and foreign contactless cards have worked at the gates since 12 October 2025, so the fix is timing, not ticketing — start at 09:45 and you will barely notice.
How much cheaper is Yuexiu than Tianhe?
About 30–40% for the same standard of room. In practice that is Yuexiu at ¥200–1,200 against Tianhe at ¥350–2,500, which over a four-night stay is roughly a free extra night. The trade is older buildings and patchier English against being able to walk to the Nanyue King tomb, Yuexiu Park and Wenming Road.
