Panyu, Guangzhou:
Cheaper, Greener, Further Out
Panyu is the big southern district, and whether it suits you comes down to one question: are you doing Chimelong? If yes, staying here saves you two hours of daily commuting. If no, you are 40–60 minutes from the old city for a saving of maybe ¥100 a night. What Panyu has beyond the theme parks is genuinely good and almost unvisited: the Guangdong Science Center at ¥60 (~$8), Shawan Ancient Town where ginger-milk pudding was invented, Baomo Garden at ¥30, Lotus Hill, and University Town's ten campuses. Lines 3, 4 and 7 serve it.

Which Chimelong park?

Chimelong Safari Park
Genuinely world-class: 20,000+ animals, the 2014 panda triplets, a drive-through tram. Line 3 or 7 to Hanxi Changlong, Exit D or E, then the free shuttle.
Guangdong Science Center
Among the largest science centres on earth by floor area, at a fifth of a Chimelong ticket. Line 4 to Guangzhou University Town. The best family value in the city.
Shawan Ancient Town
Where 姜撞奶 was invented — hot buffalo milk struck into ginger juice, set by the enzyme in about ten minutes. Pair it with Baomo Garden (¥30) for a quiet half day.
Panyu, practically
not for the city.
A Chimelong day starts at 09:30 and the walking distances inside are enormous — one family logged about 20km. Sleeping in Panyu the night before beats a 07:30 start from Yuexiu, and the resort hotels add early entry. For everything else, the maths favours the old city: you save perhaps ¥100 a night here and spend it back in metro time.

Is Panyu a good place to stay in Guangzhou?
Only if Chimelong is the centrepiece of your trip, or you want Guangzhou South station on your doorstep for an early train. For sightseeing, Yuexiu and Liwan put you inside walking distance of the sights at similar money; Panyu puts you 40–60 minutes out on Line 3.
How do you get to Chimelong from central Guangzhou?
Metro Line 3 or 7 to Hanxi Changlong, Exit D or E, then the free resort shuttle every 10–15 minutes. About 40 minutes from Tiyu Xilu, and roughly 1.5 hours from the airport.
Is Chimelong Ocean Kingdom in Panyu?
No — and this is the most common error in Guangzhou guides. Ocean Kingdom and Chimelong Spaceship are in Hengqin, Zhuhai, about an hour away by high-speed rail. The Panyu resort holds the Safari Park, Paradise, the Water Park, the Birds Park and the circus.
What is Shawan Ancient Town?
A preserved merchant town in western Panyu and the birthplace of ginger-milk pudding. Quiet, cheap and best combined with Baomo Garden. A guided day trip covers both with a local market thrown in.
